Vitamins
Vitamins are nutrients that are needed in small amounts and in most cases cannot be synthesised by the body. They must normally be provided by the diet or by supplements. Depending on our diet, state of health and lifestyle are demand may increase above that which can be provided by the diet, this is where supplements can be useful.
Vitamins play many roles in the body from growth and repair to proper functioning of the immune and digestive system plus aiding the absorption of minerals.
Vitamins are divided into two groups fat soluble and water soluble. The fat soluble vitamins are A,D,E and K. These nutrients are less likely to be destroyed by heat and light and are also stored in the body, often in the liver.
Water Soluble vitamins, vitamins B and C are easily destroyed by cooking and light and are not stored in the body. Excess amounts are usually excreted in the urine. These nutrients need to be provided on a daily basis either from the diet or via supplements.
Many people take a multivitamin and mineral tablet daily to ensure a regular intake of these nutrients. All vitamins are also available as individual supplements for specific requirements. For example many people take vitamin C during the winter to support the immune system or also to support iron absorption. B vitamins, usually found as a complex, play a role in supporting the nervous system but are also necessary for proper digestion.
When taking a number of vitamin supplements it is always a good idea to keep a check on how many supplements you are taking with the same nutrient in. As the fat soluble vitamins are stored, you may be taking more than necessary and although it is difficult to get to toxic doses it may be advisable to re-evaluate your supplement programme.
If taking a number of supplements containing the same water soluble vitamins, you may find you are taking more than can be utilised at any one time so it may be better to reduce the amount taken or spread out the doses.
