Digestive Aids

We may think we are what we eat but ultimately we are what we digest. Good digestion not only maximises the nutrients we absorb from our food but also how we absorb and utilise any supplements we take.

As we age our digestive system may slow down or just not be as effective as it was. When the body is stressed the digestive system slows down as part of the body's response. So if we are permanently in a state of stress the digestive system is not functioning properly. Poor diet, medication and even our lifestyle can also affect our digestion.

There are a wide number dietary supplements that can help the digestive system from digestive enzymes to help break down food properly to probiotics to replace the good bacteria in the gut.

Digestive enzymes can come from vegetable or animal sources and are designed to replicate the digestive enzymes in the human body. Some of the most popular are from pineapple and papaya, which provide Bromelain, a natural enzyme that helps break down proteins. Taken after a meal many users find their digestion is improved.

Probiotics replace the good bacteria in the digestive tract; they are usually measured in Colony Forming Units or CFU. This is a measure of how many bacteria were present when the capsule was manufactured. The individual bacteria are usually listed in billions rather than a weight. Acidophilus is the most common probiotics. Many people take probiotics following a course of antibiotics.

Prebiotics are the predecessors to probiotics and help the body to produce more probiotics. Prebiotics include Inulin and FOS.

Many herbs are often used to help the digestion such as peppermint and ginger. These can be taken in tablet or capsule form or more traditionally, as a herbal tea.
