Tell Me More About...
Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurvedic medicine is a form of traditional medicine originating from India that has been practiced for more than 5000 years.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that, literally translated means "science of life" or "practices of longevity".
It was the first system of health care that was developed by seers and natural scientists through centuries of observations, experiments, discussions and meditations.
Traditionally teachings were passed down orally from teacher to student. Around the 5th to 6th Century BC texts were written down in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India.
As a system of medicine and health care, Ayurveda has flourished and spread to the rest of the world where it is often viewed as an alternative therapy. It promotes an integrated approach to health aimed at preventing disease, rejuvenating the body's systems and promoting life extension through lifestyle and natural therapies.
Ayurveda, is firmly embedded in Indian philosophy and its theory of evolution, according to which the universe is composed of five basic elements, namely: ether, air, fire, water and earth. These are present in all things, and in the human body they manifest as doshas.
The three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) are the primary and essential bio-energetic forces of the human body. Each has its characteristic site and unique function in the body. They are interrelated and, in their normal state, maintain the integrity of the living organism, conferring strength and assuring normal physiological functioning as well as longevity. The three doshas need to be in a state of equilibrium or balance for the body to remain healthy. Any imbalance of these bio-energetic forces results in ill-health.
An Ayurvedic treatment looks at every person as an individual with a unique mind-body constitution and way of life, therefore needs an individual prescription. This would include not only herbal preparations but also a special diet and personal exercise programme.
Some Ayurvedic preparations are available without consulting a practitioner and these include Turmeric, Ginger, Triphla and Arjuna. Boswellia and Ashwagandha are other well-known herbs that are commonplace in the West today.
If you really want to make the most of this ancient system of healing it is certainly worth finding a practitioner in this ancient form of healing. A good place to start is the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association for more information help in finding a practitioner: www.apa.uk.com
