Product Description
Lovage is indigenous to the Mediterranean region. It grows wild in Eastern Europe and northern Greece and is cultivated elsewhere. The Lovage plant is large and stout with a pleasant aroma, similar to celery. The rubbed leaves give off an aromatic scent as does the fruit of the plant. Since earliest times, particularly since the fourteenth century, Lovage root has been a celebrated folk medicine, primarily for its diuretic and carminative properties.
Lovage root contains 0.6 to 1.0% of a volatile oil, the principal constituents (70%) of which are a series of lactone derivatives known as phthalides. Some of the same constituents are also present in celery seed, thus explaining the similarities in taste and odour. Other actives include coumarins (including bergapten, psoralen, and umbelliferone), plant acids, beta-sitosterol, resins, and gums. The phthalides are sedative and anticonvulsant.
