D-Mannose is a simple sugar very similar to glucose. It is an essential sugar found on many cells throughout the body.
E. coli, the bacteria most commonly associated with Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s), uses the D-Mannose normally present on the cells of the urinary tract wall to anchor itself to those cells.
Supplemental D-Mannose is excreted in the urine where it coats harmful bacteria.
Bacteria that have been coated with supplemental D-Mannose cannot anchor themselves to the cells of the urinary tract, so they get flushed out in the urine.
