5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid derived from the bean of a woody climbing shrub called Griffonia simplicifolia which grows in West Central Africa. 5-HTP readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that is involved in the regulation of pain, sleep, mood and other brain and nerve functions. 5-HTP is synthesized in the body from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan, which is found in high quality proteins sucd as meat, fish and dairy products. As well as its conversion to 5-HTP, L-tryptophan is also converted to niacin in the body, making 5-HTP a more reliable and consistent serotonin pre-cursor.
